Murder accused sentenced to life imprisonment in Raia murder case

The South Goa Sessions Court on Thursday sentenced a man from Jharkhand to rigorous imprisonment for life for the 2020 murder of a labourer in Raia.

The accused, Vivekdev Singh, was found guilty of killing 30-year-old Mukesh Singh, also a native of Jharkhand, during an altercation on May 24, 2020 at Colleadongor-Raia.

Sessions Judge Sherin Paul pronounced the sentence with the accused found guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder. In addition to the life sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the accused. If the fine is not paid, Singh will be required to serve an additional three years in prison. However, should the fine be settled, Rs 75,000 will be awarded as compensation to the family of the deceased.

The court also ruled that the period of detention undergone by the accused, from May 25, 2020, to April 3, 2025, will be considered as the set-off period as per Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Public prosecutor V G Costa presented the case, examining 13 witnesses, including the investigating officer PI Sagar Ekoskar. Singh was arrested by the Maina-Curtorim police for the murder, after he attacked Mukesh Singh with an axe, striking him on the head and causing his death.
