In view of the National Press Day, the Department of Information and Publicity, Goa curated a panel discussion and felicitation ceremony for ace Goan journalists on Wednesday in the heart of Panaji city. CM Pramod Sawant was among the dignitaries present at the event.
The panel debated about the influence of the media in reporting crime and sensitive matters. The discussion saw SP North Goa, Shobhit Saksena IPS, Senior Assistant Editor of the TOI, Murari Shetye, special correspondent Lokmat, Vasudev Pagi, Assistant Editor Prudent Media, Loukik Shilkar, and Psychiatrist, Peter castellino.
“Media needs to be sensible while reporting. They may have access to a lot of sensitive content, but it is the responsibility of the media to scrutinise the information before publishing,” said Shetye.
The panel, moderated by Editor, Goan Varta, Pandurang Gaonkar also highlighted the influence of social media in influencing crime patterns.
Majority of the panel agreed that reporting should always be sensible, and not all information deserves to be published.
The panel discussion was followed by a felicitation ceremony. Veteran Goan Journalist, Cyril D’cunha was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Five journalists were awarded for their contributions in the field, namely Rajendra Dessai, Vithaldas Hegde, Arvind Tengse, Peter D’souza and Kishor Shet Mandrekar.
