Need for resolving traffic congestion, parking woes in Margao highlighted

A delegation led by Prabhav Naik submitting a memorandum to the Additional Collector on the traffic and parking woes plaguing Margao.

MARGAO

Monday saw the grandson of former Minister late Babu Naik taking up with the authorities the burning issues of traffic congestion and parking woes plaguing the citizens in Congress-turned-BJP MLA Digambar Kamat’s fiefdom Margao.

After submitting a memorandum to Additional Collector, Srinet Kothwale underscoring the need for the government to focus on resolving traffic congestion in the city, Prabhav Naik later told the media that a host of other burning issues will be taken up one by one with the government for redresal.

Prabhav’s initiative only raised speculations over his plans to join politics in the footsteps of his grandfather. Prabhav, however, shot back saying “I am no stranger to taking up issues. For the moment, I am concentrating on highlighting issues and getting them resolved”.

He, however, did not deny about his political plans, by saying it all depends on the people of the city.

Briefing the media on the memorandum submitted to the Collector, Pravab said it is really frightening to see school children braving their lives while walking & crossing roads on their way to school & back home due to continuous movement of traffic including heavy vehicles.

“Government must immediately take steps to resolve the traffic congestion issue in Margao, The government must take pro-active steps to shift the schools which are in the heart of the city to Davorlim where a land is already identified to create a School Complex on lines of Cujira Complex in Bambolim”, he added.

He appealed to the Collector to take up a drive to demarcate the parking zones on all major roads of Margao. These zones need to be painted with white lines and proper sign boards needs to be erected showing demarcation of four wheelers, two wheelers, three wheelers etc., he said, while making a case of sanctioning additional 50 traffic personnel for Margao.

Saying the Old Bus Stand needs to be utilised for parking with proper demarcation of the area, Prabhav, however, lamented that the old bus stand has now become a dumping yard of accident  vehicles which are lying there for months, thus blocking space for regular parking of vehicles.

Master plan

for Margao

While batting for a Master plan for Margao city, Prabhav, however, said the master plan should be prepared by  local consultants and professions and outsiders and should be implemented only after taking the people and citizens into confidence.

His remarks on Master plan assumes significance given that the Government had appointed a Mumbai-based consultant to prepare the master plan for Margao and the plan was sought to be implemented without holding interaction with the citizenry.
