The much-delayed New District and Sessions Court and Criminal Court complex at Merces, Tiswadi—costing over Rs 120 crores—is finally set for inauguration on 19 October.

In view of the inaugural event, the District and Taluka Courts and their offices in the North Goa district will remain closed on 19 October, while 9 November (Saturday) will be a working day.

The court complex is coming up on a plot of approximately 20,091 sqm. The building (stilt plus five floors) is an RCC-framed structure with a total built-up area of 34,967 sqm.

The construction work on the new complex at Merces began in October 2016, and the initial deadline was 2021. However, in view of the COVID pandemic, the work was delayed. The new deadline set by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation was April 2024. However, it was last month that the project was completed.

The five-storey building can facilitate over 150 four-wheelers on the stilt floor, 80 four-wheelers on the first floor, and 50 four-wheelers and 50 two-wheelers in the open area.

At present, several lower courts are operating from different private buildings in the State, for which the government is paying high rents.
