CANACONA

In an appeal to the public to refrain from utilising plastic and discarding garbage be the roadsides, the NGO ‘Goenkar’ took the initiative over the past few days to conduct a roadside cleaning drive in Canacona municipality ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi.

According to Goenkar General Secretary Vikas Bhagat, the cleanliness drive was conducted in the spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi and with the tourism season around the corner.

“We (Goenkar team) have worked hard to clean the roads, particularly the stretch between Agonda and Palolem, where the collected garbage has been piled up in garbage bags awaiting its disposal,” said Bhagat.

Goenkar collected a few garbage bags from the waste/plastic picked up from the streets.

Geonkar President Jack Fernandes appealed to people to be mindful of the environment by minimising the use of plastic and refraining from littering the roads during the festive period.

Added Bhagat: “We also appeal to the elected representatives of respective areas to ensure that the roads remain clean and free from garbage in the days ahead. Let us work together to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in a way that honours both tradition and the environment!”
