No fresh case of cholera has been reported either from the Cutbona fishing jetty or the fish landing centre at Mobor-Cavelossim during the last 24 hours.

That’s not all. All the patients admitted in the South Goa District Hospital have been discharged, while only six patients are undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.

State Epidemiologist Dr Utkarsh Betodkar informed that a total of six patients are presently undergoing treatment, all at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. He said the lone patient admitted at the South Goa district hospital has been discharged on Tuesday.

The total cholera cases reported from the Cutbona fishing jetty and at the Mobor fish landing centre is around 187, Dr Utkarsh informed Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira at a review meeting of the situation at the South Goa Collectorate on Tuesday.

Of the 187 cases, Cutbona alone accounted for 151 cases, while the remaining cases of cholera were reported from the Mobor.

Dr Utkarsh said most of the patients have recovered affected by cholera have recovered and have been discharged from the hospitals. He, however, cautioned that what had happened during the initial days when the workers were brought to the hospitals at the last stage should not happen again.

He said the move to remove the old and scrap vessels from Cutbona fishing jetty will not only help contain cholera, but also go a long way to help the health services to fight dengue. “Cholera will be finally contained once the bacteria are out. But, these scrap vessels offer breeding ground for vector borne diseases,” he said.

He also advised the boat owners to immediately bring the workers hit by fever, vomiting and diarrhoea to the hospital after administering ORS and the antibiotics.

Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira later told the media that cholera is contained at the Cutbona fishing jetty. He, however, asserted that there would not be any laxity in implementing the action plan at Cutbona, saying what has been planned at the jetty will be taken to its logical conclusion.
