Says only structures encroaching on roads to face action

Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho sought to allay growing concerns about possible demolitions of houses following a recent High Court order regarding illegal constructions.
“There is panic among people that all illegal houses will be demolished after the High Court order. I want to assure everyone that the Government is concerned about its people. Only structures that encroach on highways and roads—mainly in areas required for widening—will face action,” he clarified.
“Some are misinterpreting the order and spreading unnecessary fear. We have around 30,000 houses across Goa—can we demolish all of them? The Court has asked the Government to take the matter to its logical end, and we will ensure a good decision in favour of the people. There should be no panic.”
Earlier, the minister paid tribute to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on his 134th birth anniversary at a function oganised by Panchsheel Buddha Vihar Murgao at Chicalim on Monday morning.
Speaking at the event, Godinho underlined the significance of Ambedkar’s contributions, especially for the youth. He also addressed a proposal for upgrading the Ambedkar statue at Chicalim.
Stressing on development works, the Minister said some leaders are opposing development for the sake of it, without valid reasons.
“Even the flyover works in Dabolim constituency might see slight delays due to design changes. But no one can stop development projects, especially those worth Rs 650 crore,” said Godinho.
