Despite the State government relaxing the crucial JEE criteria for admissions to engineering degree programme, almost 500 seats have been left vacant after two rounds of admissions held in June-July.

For the first time, after almost two decades, the criteria for admissions to engineering degree programme was altered in Goa with the government scrapping the Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET) for admissions and introducing Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

Following low response to engineering seats based on JEE in the first round held in June, the State government in July accorded approval to Directorate of Technical Education’s (DTE) proposal to relax JEE criteria for admissions and allowing those students, who have cleared HSSC Science stream with 45 per cent marks to apply for B.E degree course.

“Even after giving the relaxation, we have still got 500 seats vacant, mostly in the private institutions. The third round of admissions will take place from September 14. We appeal to students, who have not appeared for JEE but are interested in a B.E degree, to take this opportunity and apply for admissions,” a senior official said.

The Official explained that the students can seek admissions provided they meet all other criteria for admissions set by the All India Council for Technical Education, like minimum score of 45 per cent in physics-chemistry-mathematics in Class XII board examination.

There are total 1500 engineering seats offered by five institutions that include one State run Goa Engineering College (GCE) and private colleges - Padre Conceicao College of Engineering, Verna, Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda, Rayeshwar Institute of Engineering and Information Technology (RIEIT) Shiroda and Agnel Institute of Technology and Design, Assagao.

Sources informed that in the engineering category, students have shown preference for information technology and computer engineering.

On the other hand, all 750 seats based on NEET- National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test have been filled up. These include courses in medical, pharma, dental, nursing, etc.
