Government’s plans to give fresh lease of life to the old age homes runs by the Provedoria in South Goa seemed progressing on the right track.

After commissioning the renovation and repair work of the old age home at Majorda a month ago, the government is expediting renovation work at the old age home at Chinchinim. The Old age home at Margao located opposite the old Hospicio hospital building will be taken up for renovation in phase-III.

Minister for Provedoria Subhash Shirodkar visited the Chinchinim old age home on Monday morning to take stock of the ongoing work. Accompanied by Velim MLA Cruz Silva, the Minister took a review of the work with Provedoria and GSIDC officials.  While the GSIDC has set the contractor May end to complete the work and hand over the premises to the Provedoria, the Minister has exuded confidence that work should be complete in all respects by April end.

GSIDC senior official Jude Carvalho told The Goan that work on the Chinchinim old age home is progressing as per schedule. He said the work includes replacing the floor tiles, replacement of the mud walls, construction of toilets attached to the rooms etc.

He further said that the work, estimated to cost around Rs two crore, will also include landscaping for the benefit of the inmates.

“With the government new policy to house couples together, we had to change the plan by building attached toilets to rooms where husbands and wives are accommodated,” he said.

To a question, Carvalho said that the Margao old age home will be taken up for renovation as an when tender is floated for the work.

“We have taken up the work in phases for the simple reason that the inmates are shifted from one home to another to facilitate the contractor to take up the work,” Carvalho added.
