Onion prices in Goa are expected to hover around Rs 100 per kilo over the next few weeks, as supplies from Maharashtra have dwindled further.

While over 100 truckloads of onions usually arrive in the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) wholesale market during normal supplies every Wednesday and Saturday, only a few truckloads arrived on Saturday, of which only 10 truckloads have been dispatched to Goa, traders told The Goan.

“There are hardly any onions left in the godowns of farmers and traders in Nashik and Ahmednagar districts. The situation is expected to continue at least for another month till the new yield arrives or import of onion increases,” a farmer from Dound told The Goan.

“Moreover, farmers who were holding stocks expecting higher rates have now released the same, as onions of the previous season may get spoilt in case it is retained for some more days, the farmer said.

During the routine auction of onions on Saturday, the cheapest and low-quality small sized onions were sold at a wholesale rate of Rs 40 a kilo while the best quality large-sized dry onions touched a rate of as high as Rs 80 per kilo.
