Over 3-lakh people in Goa have subscribed to the Central government's life insurance scheme linked to savings bank accounts even as participating banks, mostly nationalised banks continue efforts to increase the number of beneficiaries, according to Ashish Malviya, Regional Head of the Union Bank of India.

Malviya was speaking at an awareness event of the scheme styled the 'Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana' on Wednesday where Bank of India's Vivesh Dadhich, Gurvinder Singh and other officials were also present.

The Jeevan Jyoti Insurance Scheme costs Rs 436 per year and provides an insurance cover of Rs 2 lakh per beneficiary, the officials told the attendees at the event.

Documentation is also processed easily at banks and claiming benefits is also simple for the nominee, Malviya said.

Meanwhile, under the awareness campaign, insurance carts will be moving in select 50 locales of both North and South Goa districts, he said, adding that people will be convinced of the benefits of this scheme and also get them registered.

Savings account holders who are aged between 18 and 50 are eligible to be covered by this insurance scheme.

According to the scheme, the insurance premium will have to be paid on May 31st, while the insurance cover will be from June 1st to May 31st. The rate of settlement of insurance claims under this scheme is also high, informed Gurvinder Singh.
