Overseas recruitment: Police book cheating case against couple

The Margao police have finally registered a case of cheating against the Rao couple in the alleged overseas recruitment scam.

Upon a complaint lodged by Arbaz CR Khan, son of Mohammad G, resident of Oilem Moll Don Khuris, Maina-Curtorim, the Margao police have registered a case against the husband-wife duo of Bala Nandeshwar Rao and Shanti Bala Rao, who had their office styled as Dream for Overseas Consulting Private Ltd at Aquem.

In his complaint, the complainant stated that from September 2023 to April 2024, the two accused persons on different occasions and with common intention dishonestly induced him to pay an amount of Rs 8.5 lakh on the pretext of providing job abroad in USA and fraudulently accepted the amount on different occasions from the complainant through bank, thereby dishonestly cheating the complainant.

A group of youngsters along with the president of Green Goa Foundation Raison Almeida had approached the Margao police station with a complaint that the Raos have allegedly duped them of lakhs of rupees under the pretext of providing overseas jobs at Malta and USA.

In fact, Raison Almeida said that many Goan youth had fallen prey to the overseas jobs promised by the consultancy firm, claiming that the youth must have been allegedly duped to the tune of Rs 10 crore.

Incidentally, the Margao Police had initially declined to register an offence on the plea the transaction of payment of money via bank transfers does not come in the police station jurisdiction.

When the media had brought the matter to the notice of the Superintendent of Police, South, Sunita Sawant on Thursday, she had promised to examine and look into the matter.
