State Congress leaders on Monday claimed that people wanted the party which had won freedom for the nation to return into power.
They were addressing a gathering after staging a tiranga rally in Chaudi-Canacona to mark the
party’s 136th Foundation Day.
Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat and GPCC President Girish Chodankar led the rally from the KTC Bus Stand to Shri Gaitonde Mini Sports Complex, near the Dy Collector’s office.
Those present at the rally included GPCC Vice President M K Shaikh, General Secretaries Subhash Phaldessai, Janardhan Bhandari, Secretary Mahadev Dessai, District (South) President Joe Dias and block presidents from Canacona and Sanguem.
“The Congress was established when British were ruling the country. The party comprised people who made sacrifices for the nation. The Congress developed this country from a situation where even a needle was imported, but now our countrymen are proud exporters of numerous products,” said Kamat.
“It is the Congress which gave secularism. The Congress is reorganising itself and we are determined to come back to power.”
Taking a dig at the BJP, Kamat said thousands of farmers have been forced to protest on the roads.
“Former Congress PM Lal Bahadur Shastri gave the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’, but see how the present regime is treating our farmer who provides us food,” he said.
GPCC President Girish Chodankar said Congress is a party which treats everyone in equality.
“The Congress doesn't differentiate between caste, class and, as everyone is given political equality and equal opportunities. We are aware that people want the party (Congress) which got freedom for the nation, back into power,” said Chodankar.
Earlier, all Congress workers took a pledge to protect the secular fabric of the nation.
