The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) may have pushed through with its plan to bulldoze the old market edifice adjacent to the fish market to build phase III of the new market, despite hurdles posed by litigation. However, ownership issues may now force it to modify the architectural design and construction plans.
CCP Mayor, Rohit Monserrate, said that when the technical team drew up the plans, the entire parcel of land was taken into account. “But now it has come to light that some of the structures and portions there are privately owned,” Monserrate said.
“The team will have to exclude those portions and revise the plan,” Monserrate added, noting that after the plans are finalised, the government will be approached to engage the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) for execution.
The CCP had shifted the fish vendors to a temporary shed and forcibly evicted the meat vendors on the ground floor before beginning demolition of the 1980s market edifice, built by the civic body in its previous incarnation as Panjim Municipal Council during the tenure of the late Francisco (Bachik) Branco.
The move aimed to facilitate the construction of phase III of the new market complex, which will now be delayed due to the land ownership issues.
