A Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Research Centre is to be set up at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, its Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar has said.
Dr Bandekar also said that the number of postgraduate seats in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy will also be increased. He made the comments while addressing occupational therapists from across the country at their annual conference held here in Goa on Friday.
The Oticon 2025 conference was inaugurated at the Kala Academy by Rajya Sabha member Sadanand Shet Tanavade in the company of Dr Vivek Vajratkar of the Goa Medical College and other office bearers of the conference Pankaj Vajpayee and Dr Jyotibha Bijlani.
“The physiotherapy and occupational therapy branches are as important as the medical branches. Whether in surgery or any other treatment, exercise and diet should complement the treatment,” Dr Bandekar said, adding that the role of the physiotherapist is crucial in it.
Bandekar also said that the GMCH is in the advanced stage of introducing a PG course in Oncology Occupational Therapy. He added that the Occupational Therapy Department at the GMC was started in 2013 and it has now expanded considerably.
Tanavade in his address at the conference underscored the need for better coordination between policy makers, legislators, researchers and practicing doctors for ensuring quality medical facilities in the State and country. “Conferences like this can achieve that coordination,” he added.
