Vasco police acted swiftly and nabbed three of the four robbers who allegedly confined a 65-year-old businessman in his house at Dabolim and stole valuables, cash, cheques and a credit card from the residence on Friday afternoon.
According to reports, the incident took place at about 2 pm, when a woman from Fatima Colony in Dabolim phoned the police to state that her husband had been tied in his house by a gang of four robbers, who were committing a robbery in their house.
A police rushed to the house and with the help of public, detained Sunil More of Ulhasnagar-Thane, one member of the gang.
The accused told police that the four-member gang led by one Dr Sanjay Verma, who was known to the complainant, had barged into their house, tied the man and forcefully demanded money from him.
When the complainant explained he did not have much cash, they demanded other valuables. As they could not find cash and valuables in the house, the mastermind, Dr Verma, forcibly took signatures of the complainant on four cheques and also took a credit card along with the PIN from the complainant.
They also ransacked the entire house and took away five foreign-made wrist watches, cash of around Rs 7,000, a mobile handset, all worth around Rs 1.2 lakh.
Multiple teams were then formed under the supervision of PI Vasco Nilesh Rane to trace the three other accused.
After a massive manhunt, the second accused, Suraj Maruti Kambli of Ulhasnagar-Thane, was traced at the Panaji bus stand in the evening, as he was trying to board a bus for Mumbai.
Acting on details provided by the accused, teams were formed from all police stations of Vasco subdivision and a search was conducted from midnight to Saturday morning.
At about 6.30 am, the third accused, Vishal Ahuja, was nabbed near one casino in Panaji. Most of the stolen articles have been recovered.
The three accused have been arrested and will be produced for remand before the JMFC at Vasco.
