Told to involve police immediately if tensions rise

In light of growing concerns over attacks on domestic tourists at beach shacks, North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal has appealed to shack owners to refrain from taking matters into their own hands and to immediately call the police if any
incidents occur.
The directive came during a meeting held on Friday evening at the Porvorim Police Station, which was attended by around 50 shack owners from the Calangute-Candolim belt.
The meeting, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, was convened to address the rising trend of violent altercations between shack staff and tourists.
Initially, SP Kaushal had instructed shack operators to close their establishments by 12 am in a bid to reduce late-night altercations.
However, after discussions, he allowed shacks with the necessary permits to operate until 1 am.
During the meeting, Kaushal questioned why such attacks were predominantly occurring in the Calangute-Candolim area and not in other parts of Goa, prompting further discussions on potential reasons behind the incidents.
A shack operator, who wished to remain anonymous, shared details of the SP’s instructions, emphasising that Kaushal stressed the importance of not using force against tourists, even those who may become intoxicated.
The SP urged operators to treat tourists with respect and call the police immediately if any issues arise.
“Don’t take the law into your hands, especially when dealing with drunk or unruly tourists,” Kaushal emphasised.
Kaushal’s statements underline the importance of maintaining peace and order in Goa’s popular tourist spots.
The authorities are working to ensure that such incidents do not tarnish the State’s reputation as a tourist destination.
The meeting served as a reminder to shack owners to prioritise safety and seek proper legal assistance in case of conflicts, rather than engaging in physical confrontations.
