Thousands of visitors who headed for the Colva beach on Sunday returned home disappointed with the police guarding the entry and exit points to the iconic beach on Sunday to avoid overcrowding.

The scene at the adjoining Benaulim beach was no different on Sunday with the police denying entry to visitors to the beach as a precautionary measure.

The sudden action by the men-in-uniform comes against the backdrop of overcrowding at the Colva beach on Saturday evening, throwing Covid protocols to the winds.

Colva police personnel and traffic personnel were mobilized at the Colva beach square, as dozens of vehicles, both local and visitors, headed to the world famous beach for a Sunday outing.

The entire parking lot at the beach entrance wore a deserted look, as the police conveyed a clear message to the motorists that entry to the world class beach is closed for the day. The entire parking lot would have been full with vehicles on Sunday evening if one went by the bumper-to-bumper traffic along the Margao-Colva beach road.

Goa police traffic PI Deu Mangaonkar said the traffic police personnel were deployed in strengthen to ensure that the motorists do not park vehicles near the beach entrance.

He along with a PSI attached to the Colva police station were manning the Colva beach front upon instructions from the higher-ups.

PI Deu further said that traffic personnel were also deployed at the Benaulim beach to ensure that people do not park vehicles near the beach since the entry is closed for the day.
