Political leaders in Goa have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, remembering his strong influence on peace, compassion, and social justice.
Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai described Pope Francis as a symbol of mercy, compassion, and humility for the whole world. He said the Pope’s death is a great loss to the spiritual world.
“Pope Francis will always be remembered as a spiritual teacher of the highest order, who tirelessly spread the message of human love, global harmony, and peace. A bold reformer, he courageously addressed critical global issues—be it terrorism, climate change, or the plight of refugees—always standing firm for justice, compassion, and human dignity,” the Governor said, recalling the personal blessing he received from His Holiness Pope Francis through Cardinal George Koovakatt.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also shared his condolences, highlighting Pope Francis’s strong commitment to humanity that went beyond borders and religions.
“On behalf of the Government of Goa, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Catholic community in Goa and across the world. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the Chief Minister wrote. He praised the Pope’s dedication to helping the suffering and spreading compassion.
Union Minister of State and North Goa MP Shripad Naik expressed similar feelings, speaking of the Pope’s life of service based on Christ’s teachings and his care for the poor.
“A beacon of compassion and humility, he inspired hope among the suffering. His legacy will endure forever,” Naik wrote, offering his condolences to the global Catholic community.
Minister Rohan Khaunte also expressed grief, mourning the loss of “an Apostle of Peace and Harmony for the entire world.”
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao also paid tribute, recognising the Pope’s constant work for peace and justice.
“His human warmth and humility were a comfort to many, and his legacy will undoubtedly continue to shape the Catholic Church and the world for generations to come. May his soul rest in peace,” Alemao said.
Amit Patkar, President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, stated, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Pope Francis — a global symbol of peace, compassion, and interfaith harmony. His legacy will continue to inspire the world to stand for justice, equality, and unity. My heartfelt condolences to our Christian brothers and sisters in Goa, and across the world.”
Law Minister Aleixo Sequeira said, “A light has gone out in the world, but his message will shine forever. We, the faithful, mourn deeply the passing of Pope Francis—a shepherd who led with love, humility, and courage. His words healed, his presence comforted, and his life inspired millions. As we grieve this great loss, we lift our hearts in prayer—for his soul, for the Church, and for one another. May the Lord grant him eternal peace and reward him for a life lived in service to God and humanity. Amen.”
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho also offered his tribute, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. A spiritual beacon to millions across the world, Pope Francis was not only a revered leader of the Catholic Church but also a symbol of compassion, humility, and unwavering faith. His papacy marked a new era of inclusivity, mercy, and dialogue — reaching beyond the boundaries of religion to touch hearts with his messages of peace, environmental responsibility, and care for the marginalized. Whether addressing global leaders or embracing the poor, his actions always reflected the love of Christ and the spirit of true humanity...In this moment of profound grief, my thoughts and prayers are with my Catholic community and all those mourning this immense loss. May his soul find eternal rest in the arms of the Lord.”
Tiatr Academy of Goa President Anthony Barbosa also expressed sorrow at the Pope’s death.
“It is with profound sorrow that I, on behalf of the Tiatr Academy of Goa, extend my deepest condolences on the sad demise of His Holiness Pope Francis. The world has lost a spiritual leader whose humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalised touched millions across the globe. His Holiness was a beacon of hope, a symbol of peace, and an embodiment of Christ-like love in action. His guidance and teachings have left an indelible mark not only on the Catholic Church but on humanity as a whole. We pray that his soul rests in eternal peace and that his legacy continues to inspire generations to come,” Barbosa said.
