The Cutbona jetty has received a fresh lease of life after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant with Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira in tow descended at the jetty post-outbreak of dengue and cholera cases.

Exactly a month later, the fishing jetty has witnessed a turnaround, both on the sanitation and hygiene front. Thanks to Minister Aleixo Sequeira and the cooperation extended by the mechanised boat owners, the jetty finally appeared spruced up in the last one month.

Consider this. When Sequeira along with Additional Collectors, Srinet Kothwale and Uday Prabhudesai, besides Salcete Mamlatdar Prataprao Gaonkar visited the Cutbona jetty, the 222-metre long extended jetty portion appeared clear and free from encroachments.

The waste dump comprising of dinghies and fishing nets have disappeared from the jetty. And, so has the 46 vessels towed away to the southern portion of the jetty.

From the government side, the PWD, Water Supply has laid a dedicated water supply line to the jetty. The line will be commissioned once the boat owners procure the water tank.

The jetty shed has been illuminated by the Power Department.

The burning issue of sanitation has been addressed with the setting up of the 30 makeshift mobile toilets, with the cost of maintenance borne by the boat owners, Rs 10 lakh per month.

Sequeira told the media almost all the issues have been resolved and the minor issues will be addressed in the next seven days. “I am happy there is transformation at the Cutbona jetty since Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the jetty on September 11. Everyone will agree of the turnaround. Few small things will be resolved in the next seven days,” he added.
