Potholes on the Goa-Belagavi road have made the Karnataka section of the Chorla Ghat dangerous for commuters over the past two months. In the past 15 days, two major accidents have taken place there. In response, residents have demanded the road be repaired at the earliest.
In the first accident that took place 10 days ago, four people suffered serious injuries after a pickup truck they were traveling in went off road. In the second accident two days ago, one person was killed after a passenger van went off road and crashed.
Several vehicles are left stranded on the road after their tires are damaged due to the potholes.
Despite several appeals, the Karnataka government has failed to take up repairs of the road. Notably, the road is slated for widening and repair reportedly at a cost of Rs 700 crore.
Heavy vehicles are also violating a ban to ply on the road from 6 am to 10 pm, increasing the risks for travelers.
Salman Bepari, who transports vegetables on this highway every day, said the potholes on this road are very dangerous and that the government is yet to act despite repeated appeals.
