Paradeep Phosphates Limited (PPL) on Tuesday focused on free thyroid checks at a health camp and in the Cyclone Shelter at Zuarinagar, a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

Sancoale Zilla Panchayat (ZP) member Anita Thorat inaugurated the camp in the presence of PPL Goa Unit Head Nilesh Dessai, social worker Eddie Fernandes, and others.

PPL Goa Unit Head Nilesh Dessai explained that the health camp was part of the company's CSR efforts.

“Though PPL faced financial difficulties over the past four years, after taking over from Zuari Agro Chemicals in 2022, we have regained momentum. This health camp may seem small, but we are committed to organising bigger projects in the future,” said Dessai.

Speaking to reporters after the inauguration, ZP Thorat said such health camps are particularly important for women and thanked the PPL for conducting the free healthcare camp.

"Thyroid is a very important aspect of human health. These tests are vital for people, especially women and housewives who often ignore their health due to the demands of daily life," said Thorat.

Thorat stressed the need for regular health check-ups, noting that thyroid problems often go undetected.

Thorat also highlighted the need for other such initiatives targeted at home-makers. "Housewives make the biggest contribution to their families but often delay medical check-ups. Our organisation, Mahila Shakti, has been conducting health camps on a grand scale, and we are ready to collaborate with PPL for more such initiatives. Zuarinagar has a large female population, and together we can organise comprehensive health camps for women," she said.

Social worker Eddie Fernandes said many people had benefited from the free thyroid tests.

"A thyroid test can cost up to Rs 700 in a lab, and many people avoid it due to the expense," said Fernandes.
