With only Priya Mishal, former chairperson and councillor of the ruling BJP group, filing her nomination for the post of chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal Council on Thursday, her election to the position will be unopposed.
As a result, the council meeting scheduled for Friday to elect a new chairperson will be a mere formality.
Mishal, a councillor from Ward 10, submitted four sets of nominations before Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar.
Her candidacy was proposed by councillors Nutan Bicholkar, Prakash Bhivshet, Ashirwad Khorjuvenkar and Barbara Carrasco.
This marks the second time Mishal will assume the top post, having previously been elected as chairperson in 2023.
Following Mishal’s election, Vice-Chairperson Sushant Harmalkar is expected to resign to make way for councillor Prakash Bhivshet to take over the role.
The election for the chairperson’s post was necessitated after former chairperson Nutan Bicholkar stepped down following nearly a year in office.
