Mapusa Councillor Priya Mishal surrounded by her colleagues while filing her nomination before MMC Chief Officer Amitesh Shirvoikar on Monday morning.

With only Priya Mishal, a councillor of the ruling BJP group filing her nomination for the post of chairperson of the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday, her election to the post will be unopposed.
Consequently, the council meeting called to elect a new chairperson on Tuesday will be of academic interest.
Independent Councillor from Ward 20, Prakash Bhivshet proposed the name of Priya Mishal for the top post.
Mishal, who is councillor of Ward 10, filed two sets of nominations before Chief Officer, Amitesh Shirvoikar.
A first-time councillor, Mishal’s performance will come under a scanner as she hardly participated in discussions during council meetings for the last 18 months.
The Goan had reported that Mishal’s name was confirmed for the post of the chairperson in a meeting of councillors owing allegiance to BJP and some independents supporting the ruling group held at the behest of the local MLA.
After the election of the new chairperson, Vice-Chairperson Chandrashekar Benkar is expected to resign from his post to make way for councillor Viraj Phadke.
The election to the chairperson was necessitated after former chairperson, Shubanghi Vaigankar resigned from her post after running the affairs of the council for nearly 18 months.
At present, MMC Vice Chairperson Chandrashekar Benkar has been functioning as the Acting Chairperson of the council.
