Household appliances were gutted in a fire at a flat at Bhutkiwada-Socorro on Thursday afternoon.
The incident took place at around 1.50 pm, when fire broke out in the flat owned by Anna Lobo on the first floor of Isha Apartment, which had been rented out to Mukesh Thakur.
Thakur's wife had locked the flat and gone out at around 1.30 pm, when the fire started a short while later.
Porvorim Fire Station Officer Damodar Pednekar said they received a call at around 1.55 pm regarding a fire in the flat.
A fire brigade from the Porvorim fire station and one from the Mapusa fire station were pressed into service to extinguish the fire. The firefighters managed to rescue a dog in the house along with jewellery from the cupboard.
Home appliances like TV, fridge and washing machine, furniture and other property worth an estimated Rs 4 lakh were damaged in the fire.
“The exact cause of fire is unclear and we have reported the matter to the electricity and police departments,” said Pednekar.
