It took about 15 mishaps for authorities to finally close an accident-prone road-crossing at Kolsar-Galgibaga along the Canacona bypass.
A day after the fatal accident which claimed three lives on another accident-prone zone along the bypass at Rajbhag -Tarir, the PWD on Thursday swung into action and decided to close the road-crossing at Kolsar-Galgibaga.
Locals have alleged that 15 mishaps have taken place at the road-crossing at Kolsar-Galgibaga resulting two deaths and several injuries, besides damage to several vehicles.
The construction to erect a road-divider at Kolsar-Galgibaga has been taken up by the road contractor under the supervision of PWD (Highways) Canacona on Thursday.
As work began on Thursday morning, a police team was deployed to regulate traffic on both sides of the bypass.
PWD (Highway) Junior Engineer Nagraj Adpaikar, who was supervising the work, informed the 22-m long Divider is being constructed by the contractor at its own cost and PWD will make no payment for it.
The MVR has constructed the 7.74 km four-lane expressway between Char-Rasta and Maxem 4-Lane, later name the Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Road (MPCBR) and will carry out maintenance works for 4 years.
According to sources, the original plan for the 7.74-km 4-lane road had no road-crossing provisions, but locals alleged that an opening was made to facilitate a commercial establishment at Kolsar-Galgibaga.
