Raid exposes migrant hawkers using offices as residences at Old Market

Fatorda police cracking a whip against migrants and hawkers at the Old Market Circle and SGPDA ground footpath.

MARGAO
A raid conducted by the Fatorda police on the migrant street hawkers at the Old Market Circle has revealed that the hawkers were putting up in shops located in the adjoining commercial complex.

The police team that cracked a whip against the hawkers during the night found their way to the commercial complex, only to find a group of hawkers inside an office with goods.

Police were on the job to check documents produced by the hawkers whether they have occupied office/ shop on lease or have been purchased by them for the purpose of doing business at the Old Market Circle.

That’s not all. The presence of the migrant hawkers sleeping on the Old Market Circle-KTC bus stand footpath and the adjoining SGPDA grounds had come under the lens of local citizens. In fact, local citizens had recently made a representation to the Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai to crack a whip against the migrant hawkers swarming around the Old Market Circle, and posing a nuisance to the motorists and pedestrians.

The Fatorda MLA told the media that he has told Fatorda police station in-charge, PI Nathan Almeida to crack a whip against the hawkers doing business at the Old Market Circle. “The presence of migrant hawkers doing business at the Old Market Circle or sleeping on the footpath right at the entrance of the city sends out a wrong impression to the visitors and strangers. I have told the police to come down heavily on the hawkers and migrants who have made the footpaths and the SGPDA ground their home,” he asserted.
