PANAJI
Heavy rains lashed Goa on Tuesday bringing life to a grinding halt in many areas that saw flood-like situation and authorities went into alert mode near major rivers.

The situation was no different in Panaji bringing back the perrenial flooding isues. The heavy downpour left several roads inundated in the capital city, disrupting traffic and normal life.

Among the worst affected areas were the Patto Plaza, 18th June Road and Dayanand Bandodkar Road, with motorists struggling to travel along the flooded stretches.

Water levels rose above footpaths at some places along the 18th June Road and near the Saraswati Mandir. Shopkeepers scrambled to prevent water from entering their shops while some others downed their shutter for the day.

Pedestrians also struggled to walk on the streets and footpaths and many got drenched with water getting splashed on them from moving vehicles.

Speaking to reporters, an angry shopkeeper complained about water entering his shop.

“Streets were waterlogged and water entered my shop. I was forced to close. We face this problem 3-4 times during every monsoon and the government is doing nothing to resolve the issue.”

“There is no point in complaining to the Corporation of the City of Panaji as the CCP administrative office is near our shop and is fully aware of the situation,” the shopkeeper added.

The Panaji fire station said a tree had uprooted at Tambdi Mati.

When contacted, CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate said high tide was the main reason for waterlogging roads in Panaji, adding that the corporation had done everything possible to de-silt and clean the ducts.

“We have taken utmost care to keep the drains clean, but during high tide we can’t do anything. After the high tide, water started receding,” said Monserrate.

He also said infrastructure in Panaji would be upgraded after the monsoon season.
