Stating that religious intolerance is a real concern in North India, Conference of Diocesan Priests of India (CDPI) Vice-President Fr John Crasta stated that there have been instances where prayer meetings are disrupted and prayer halls attacked.

Replying to a question at a news conference on Monday, Fr Crasta said they are protesting as silently as possible and have been forgiving each other.

“We are trying to spread the message of forgiveness and mercy,” he added.

Speaking on the issue, CDPI Patron Bishop of Warangal Udumala Bala Showreddy said the bishops had convened a meeting last month, to deliberate on the issue.

A message has been sent to the Central government conveying the sentiments regarding religious intolerance, particularly in North India, he said.

When questioned whether it had brought about any change in the situation, Bishop Bala replied: “Initially our concern was not taken seriously, but after the unexpected Delhi rout (where BJP lost the assembly elections), the Central government is taking the issue more seriously.”
