Berta de Mendez Bragança, a prominent freedom fighter whose legacy is featured at the 'Aguad Interactive Museum: Goa - The Land, The Struggle, The People' in Sinquerim, was born in Mormugao on December 17, 1911. In 1952, she was appointed President of the Indian National Congress (Goa), Belgaum branch. In the 1950s, Berta was chosen to represent India at the Afro-Asian Women's Conference in Cairo, during which the issue of Goa's freedom was discussed in detail. She was also part of a delegation to Moscow meant to attract attention to the same issue, along with the Goa liberation movement. In 1961, as part of the National Campaign Committee, she toured India, advocating for military intervention. She also participated in key conferences in Delhi, Calcutta, Ahmedabad, and Bombay, where the liberation of Goa was a central issue of discussion.
