Residents of Fontainhas, Sao Tome demand action against unorganised tourism

Panaji: Locals from Panaji’s heritage wards- Fontainhas and Sao Tome, today raised concern over unorganized tourism and the nuisance caused by it to the residents of the area.

Addressing a press conference, the locals while extending support to tourism, were vocal about the challenges posed by unregulated and disorganized tourism activities. They pointed out how the commercial signages have overshadowed the area’s historic charm and demanded action by the authorities to replace these hoardings.

“We are not against tourism, but we are against unorganized tourism,” a resident emphasized.

Concerns were also raised about the behaviour of tourist taxis, which frequently breach local traffic rules. “Many tourist taxis are larger vehicles ill-suited for the narrow lanes of Fontainhas,” a resident pointed out.

Additionally, the presence of casino-goers vehicles has further cluttered the streets. “With increasing motorcycle and vehicle parking, areas like Panaji are beginning to resemble parking lots rather than vibrant urban spaces,” one resident lamented.

The residents have also highlighted the mismanaged traffic and parking in Fontainhas. Issues surrounding traffic management are compounded by the lack of clear directional signage. “The absence of no-entry signs and clear parking regulations has created a chaotic driving environment,” Jotivo Lopes, a resident of Fontainhas noted, emphasizing the dangers posed to families with young children and elderly residents navigating the narrow streets.

Further exacerbating the problem is the malfunctioning surveillance system. Installed over three years ago, the cameras have yet to be integrated into a centralized monitoring system. The community believes this could serve as a deterrent against traffic violations. “In Hyderabad, strict adherence to traffic laws is driven by constant monitoring, creating a culture of accountability,” one resident explained, advocating for a similar approach in Fontainhas.

Residents have also expressed concerns about non-resident parking spilling onto main arterial roads, leading to significant traffic jams, especially with larger vehicles attempting to navigate the narrow lanes. “We urge the government to consider appointing tourist police or traffic officials to help manage the situation,” said another resident, reflecting the community’s frustration over unregulated tourist behaviour.

There is a push to make Fontainhas more pedestrian-friendly to enhance the local experience.

Moreover, community members expressed their desire to maintain the intimate nature of local festivals, voicing opposition to the commercialization of events like the ‘Festa de Povo,’ which they feel detracts from their community's character. “We have gathered 100 signatures to formally reject its return, citing poor management of the event,” one resident shared.
