Efforts by the State government to propose a law college on government land in Mayem received a major setback on Sunday, when residents at the Mayem Gram Sabha unanimously passed a resolution to oppose the project.

When the issue came up for discussion at the Gram Sabha, residents made it clear that land ownership issues in the village should first be resolved before proposing projects in the village.

Mayem Sarpanch Krishna Chodankar, the deputy sarpanch, panchayat members, secretary Mahadev Naik and a large number of villagers were present at the Gram Sabha which was convened in the Panchayat Hall.

While providing details on the proposed project, Sarpanch Krishna Chodankar invited the residents to take a decision in the matter and that, the panchayat would support their decision.

A number of villagers spoke in the matter and objected to this proposal after highlighting the difficulties and obstacles they have faced during the process of granting the Sanad and other land ownership issues.

Santosh Kumar Sawant insisted that although the land for the proposed project is with the government, it cannot be used as it wanted and warned that people would not remain silent in the matter.

Rajesh Kalangutkar said the evacuee property issue is still unresolved and the government should not consider setting up any project in the village till the land ownership issue is fully settled. He also demanded that all households in the village should get the benefits of all the government schemes.

Former sarpanch Sakharam Pednekar pointed out to the struggles faced by residents and said the farmers were still not getting the desired benefits of government schemes.

Many residents expressed the view that despite government officials being aware of this issue, obstacles were still being created in this regard.

While pointing out that they were not against development, some residents however insisted that all issues should be resolved in the village.

Rajesh Kalangutkar moved a resolution stating that residents would not support any project until the property issue is resolved, which was approved by former sarpanch Sakharam Pednekar.

Santosh Kumar Sawant moved a resolution opposing the proposed law college project, which was seconded by Krishna Parab and unanimously approved by the residents.
