With the permanent campus of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) finally taking shape at Cuncolim, locals have sounded the bugle with the demand that the institute open the doors for the local youth for jobs as well as for business avenues at the campus.
Chairperson of the Cuncolim Municipal Council Landry Mascarenhas reminded the government as well as the NIT officials that Cuncolim plays host to rich pool of human resources, including doctors and engineers and the management should tap the local talent at the campus.
A delegation of youngsters from Cuncolim on Tuesday visited the office of Leader of Opposition and Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao with a plea to provide them avenues to run taxi services at the NIT campus. Pointing out that they come across Karnataka and Maharashtra registration plate cars plying in and out of the campus, the youngsters demanded that the MLA take up cudgels for them by getting a taxi service at the campus for the locals.
In the absence of Leader of Opposition, Yuri’s personal assistant Assis Noronha accepted the memorandum from the delegation, but not before assuring the youth that the Cuncolim MLA will take up the issue of reservation of jobs and other business opportunities for the local populace.
Noronha assured the delegation that the MLA will strongly take up the issue of jobs for the local youth at the NIT campus.
CMC Chairperson Landry Mascarenhas pointed out that the NIT should consider recruiting the educated professionals at the campus and not just labourers for gardening and sweeping.
“Cuncolkars have made an name in the field of education. The village have a rich pool of human resources. Instead of only providing jobs such as sweepers and gardeners, the NIT should do well in recruiting professionals from the village at the campus”, Landry demanded.
Incidentally, the Opposition leader had made an fervent plea to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at the commemoration of Chieftain’s Day at Cuncolim on July 15 last year, to ensure that local youth get the jobs inside the campus.
Locals pointed out that when the NIT campus row had hit the village at the time of land acquisition, a group of citizens had made a strong case in support of the project, on the premise that the project would catapult Cuncolim on the country’s education map and provide jobs to the local unemployed.
