Sujal Gawade and Kanisha Gadekar, two teachers at Shree Saraswati Vidyamandir Primary School in Vagali-Camurlim, have been detained by Colvale police, a day after being interrogated for allegedly assaulting a Class IV student.
DySP Sandesh Chodankar told The Goan that their arrest is likely under BNS.
The nine-year-old student was brutally beaten by one of the two teachers on Monday morning for tearing a page from a book. The incident snowballed into a major controversy, prompting immediate action from authorities.
The teachers were suspended by the Education Department and charged by the police with criminal offences.
The student, currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, sustained injuries on his hands, thighs, legs and back. According to the complaint, he was also slapped, kicked in the stomach, and was dragged by his ear across a writing board.
The second teacher, charged with restraining the child during the attack, allegedly threatened the boy’s cousin, warning her not to report the incident.
The Education Department has condemned the incident with Director of Education Shailesh Zingade stating, "Corporal punishment is banned, and such behaviour from teachers is intolerable."
