Smiles lit the faces of Curtorim farmers as they harvested a bumper catch of fresh water lake fish near the church on Sunday. What, however, came as good news was the return of the 'chikalo' fish in the water body which has been getting extinct in recent times.
In fact, chikalo fish came as a big surprise for the farmers and fish lovers, who came from Salcete villages and outside to lay their hands on fresh water fish.
In fact, fresh water fish lovers made a beeline at Curtorim lake since Sunday morning.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco who made his presence felt at the spot expressed his satisfaction over the presence of chikalo. "I am happy that chikalo has made a return in our water bodies. Chikalo was getting extinct and the presence of the fish in the nets is a good news", he said
The four-time Curtorim MLA has underscored the need to protect the age old biodiversity for posterity. "Curtorim is known as the granary of Salcete. Farmers cultivate fields with the waters stored in these lakes We are blessed with a number of water bodies. The biodiversity needs to be protected for the future", he added.
