Road map unveiled to address issues plaguing Margao

Lyndon Pereira is all smiles as he makes it to the MMC Chairperson’s saddle unopposed on Thursday.

MARGAO
Newly-elected Margao Municipal Chairperson Lyndon Pereira on Thursday unveiled a road map to address the burning issues plaguing the city, including the Sonsodo imbroglio and has promised Madgavkars a citizen-friendly and corruption-free administration during his stint in the office.

The two-time Goa Forward-backed Councillor made no bones about the fact that he could occupy the hot seat for only 15 months before handing the baton to his successor as part of the rotation system worked out by the Margao Civic Alliance (MCA) headed by Opposition leader Digambar Kamat and Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai.

Saying his hard work has helped him to fulfill his dream to head the Margao civic body, Lyndon dedicated his position to his late mother, who he said, had inspired him to work for the people.

Shortly after taking over the reigns of office after being elected unopposed by Presiding Officer Srinet Kothalwae, Lyndon told the media that he would get down to business from tomorrow and help clear the inert lying at the Sonsodo legacy dump. “I have already identified land near the KTC bus stand, which can be used for disposal of the inert. Sonsodo is a big issue and it will be resolved with the help of the three MLAs -- Digambar Kamat, Vijai Sardesai and Reginaldo Lourenco. We will discuss the garbage issue with the Solid Waste Management Corporation”, he said.

He assured Madgavkars that the new council will discuss the parking project at the first meeting of the council so that the work on the project, which was delayed by GST and other issues, gets underway at the earliest.

Outlining plans to streamline the administration, Lyndon said a mechanism will be put in place so that people get their work done within 15 days. “Complaints of files going missing in the civic body are aplenty. This should stop. The defunct CCTV cameras will be activated. Stress will be laid on online system of payment of taxes. Officers will be made accountable for pending files”, he said, while promising to provide citizen-friendly administration.

Stressing on good governance sans corruption, the new civic chief said he would take all the 25 city fathers into confidence, irrespective of their party affiliations, for the development of the city.

Questioning the government’s delay in sanctioning health care workers to manage the two Covid care centres proposed by the Margao Municipal Council, Lyndon lamented that Margao has been ignored despite the government approving doctors and nurses for Covid care centres at Colva.

Given that the monsoon is round the corner, Lyndon has unveiled plans to take up desilting in all the 25 municipal wards with the help of the ward councillors.

After the election of Lyndon as the new civic chief and Deepali as deputy, Opposition leader Digambar Kamat and Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai visited the civic body to congratulate the duo on their election.
