PORVORIM
Despite daily garbage collection drives and appeals by elected representatives, the road opposite the Primary Health Centre at Porvorim has become a dumping ground for garbage.
Garbage is being dumped by people and has started to decompose and emit stench in the area. The site has also turned into an open urinal.
Former sarpanch and sitting panch of Penha de Franca Swapnil Chodankar lamented that some educated people residing in the area have been throwing garbage by the roadside.
“The panchayat has been collecting garbage on a day-to-day basis and we have been appealing to people not to litter garbage in the open spaces, but in vain,” said Chodankar.
“The panchayat has, therefore, has started installing CCTV cameras in Penha de Franca constituency. The installation of CCTV cameras in Wards 1 to 6 has been completed and seven cameras has been installed in each ward.”
“Work to install CCTV cameras in Wards 7 to 11 on Porvorim Plateau is in progress. Once this installation work is completed, it will be easier for the panchayat and police to identify those persons caught dumping garbage in open spaces and take legal action accordingly,” said Chodankar.
Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte also voiced his frustration over the dumping of garbage by the roadsides.
“Despite repeated appeals to people to maintain cleanliness in the village, people continue to dump garbage by the roadside and in the open spaces. The Penha de Franca panchayat has been collecting garbage on a door-to-door basis, while also collecting garden waste in trucks,” said Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte.
“Yes, garbage is seen dumped by the roadside on a daily basis in most of the wards. Now, the time has come to penalise people throwing garbage in open spaces and this will be possible only after installation of CCTV cameras,” said Khaunte.
