A family had a lucky escape when their house was gutted in a fire near Laxminarayan temple in Sada-Vasco in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters, Vidhyadhar Nagvekar said the incident occurred when the family was asleep.
“At around 2 am, my wife started screaming that the house is on fire and tried to douse it by pouring water. We then realised that the fire was going beyond control and neighbours began helping and trying to save any equipment from my house,” said Nagvekar.
“One neighbour even got into the house and removed our gas cylinders. We had gold and cash in the house and all that was destroyed along with other things. A major portion of my house has been gutted along with electronic items like refrigerator, fans, TV and ACs," said Nagvekar.
Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Wednesday visited the site and interacted with the family.
He demanded that authorities expedite the process of compensation to the family.
"We have seen that there was incessant rain and power fluctuations, and a short circuit is suspected to be the cause of the fire that has gutted the house. Residents in this house are senior citizens and also have health issues. I will follow up on the compensation on their behalf. I appeal to authorities to expedite the process of compensation to them after getting the necessary reports," said Amonkar.
