There’s finally good news in store for the residents of Tolleacanto in particular and Velim in general as the Director of Sports Authority of Goa has assured to take the long-delayed sports complex project to the logical conclusion.
Thanks to the initiative by newly-elected Aam Admi Party Velim MLA Cruz Silva, SAG Director Vandana Rao and other officials descended at Tolleacanto for an inspection of the sports complex project on Friday. That’s not all. The Velim MLA has suggested to the SAG Director to explore the possibility of the Tolleacanto group playing host to the U-17 women's World Cup matches.
The sports complex had remained shut over the last five years with no activity around, virtually resulting in the ambitious project becoming a white elephant. Upon his election, the newly-elected Velim MLA dashed off letters to the SAG director and other officials for an inspection of the complex and to ensure that the imposing infrastructure is put to use for the benefit of the local youth. “The inspection has revealed that the building is ready in all respects, but the ground pitch of the football grounds remains incomplete”, Cruz told the media after the inspection.
He added: “We have insisted on the SAG Director that the space outside the complex could be put to use for various sports activities such as basketball, volleyball, futsal court and skating for children. The Director has promised to consider our suggestions”.
While saying the SAG Director has promised to place the proposal of the Tolleacanto ground playing host to the world cup U-17 women matches, Cruz has exuded confidence that the ground would soon become a reality.
Fra Allan Tavares, who was present during the inspection, said the SAG Director was excited to find the ground with so many facilities and infrastructure. “I appreciate the former MLA Benjamin D’Silva who had put his work during his time to make the ground a reality. I feel that ground should become a community centre and a community hub”, he said, while wishing all success for the new MLA, who has been working to restore back the wealth to the village.
