MARGAO
Sending a message loud and clear that the administration means business in enforcing the directions issued by the South district magistrate on banning housie in the district, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Margao, Ramesh Gaonkar on Thursday directed the police stations in Salcete to seize all promotional material relating to illegal gambling activities, including housie.
In a memorandum, SDM Gaonkar further directed the in-charges of the police stations of Margao, Maina-Curtorim, Verna, Colva, Cuncolim and Fatorda to initiate appropriate legal action against the violators under the provisions of the Goa Public Gambling Act, 1976.
This matter may be treated as ‘Most Urgent’ and necessary action be taken forthwith to ensure strict compliance with the law, the SDM stated in his order.
SDM Gaonkar referred to the memorandum issued by the South Goa district Magistrate Egna Cleetus to enforce the provisions of the Goa Public Gambling Act, 1976, pointing out that the memorandum highlights that illegal gambling activities, including but not limited to “housie” are being organised in various parts of South Goa district.
“It has been observed that several posters, banners, and advertisements promoting such activities are being publicly displayed within the jurisdiction of Salcete. These promotional materials by various organisers blatantly violate the provisions of the said Act,” the SDM added.
