The scientific treatment of waste in the State received a boost after the solid waste management facility (SWMF) at Saligao, which had the capacity to treat waste of 100 tons per day (TPD) was expanded to treat 250 TPD.
The facility shall cater to 27 village panchayats in the catchment area and other local bodies based on availability of treatment capacity.
The project which has been funded by NABARD under the rural infrastructure development fund scheme has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 103 crore.
“The expansion of the plant was the need of the hour as we started receiving waste of 150 to 200 tons per day when the capacity of the plant was just 100 TPD. We never said no to waste brought in even from South Goa. This enhanced facility will now cater to the entire North Goa coastal belt,” Waste Management Minister, Michael Lobo said.
Lobo was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the enhancement of the 100 TPD solid waste management facility at Saligao. Chief Secretary was also present among other dignitaries.
Incidentally, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant who was supposed to inaugurate the additional facility gave the function a miss.
Speaking further, Lobo said the government had to face a lot of obstacles when it first decided to set up the waste treatment plant in 2016.
“We were taken to the High Court, NGT and even to the Supreme Court. But we overcame all the difficulties and finally came up with this state of the art project on this site. This plant is the best thing to happen to the State,” he said.
The proposed plant is designed in line with the solid waste management rules, 2016. The plant has separate lines for wet and dry waste with the organic extruder and bio-methanation system being the heart of the system.
The SWMF is enhanced considering the increasing waste generation in the catchment area and change in characterization over the period of time.
The facility is set up by Ms Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd that also established the existing 100 TPD SWMF at the site and operating and maintaining the same since August 2016.
