South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Monday said he would contest the ensuing Lok Sabha polls for the last time if given a ticket by the Congress party.

After inaugurating the development of the playground at Chandor on Monday in the presence of Cuncolim MLA and Opposition leader Yuri Alemao, Sarpanch Estefan Dias and others, the four-time MP said, “If given the ticket by the Congress party, I will contest the coming polls for the last time in my career. If given the ticket, I will come back to you for help and support for my candidature."

After launching the playground works at a cost of Rs 42 crore from the MPLAD scheme, Sardinha said he had provided computers and laptops to both the urban and rural schools for the benefit of the student community without any discrimination. “I have also provided 42 tricycles to the differently abled persons during my stint as the MP,” he said.

The MP made a fervent plea to the people of Goa to attend the Opinion Poll Day celebration at the Lohia Maidan on Tuesday evening. “This is not a Congress function but a function of the people of Goa. We had all worked during the Opinion Poll to save Goa from being merged into Maharashtra,” he said.

Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao said MP Sardinha has honoured his word by taking up the development of the playground at Chandor in the interest of football.

Yuri said the proposal to declare Chandor as a heritage village will be taken forward on January 17 when a meeting will be held in the village with the GSIDC consultant for future planning with suggestions from the people. He said underground cabling worth Rs 35 crore will be taken up in the village, saying the tender will be floated before the election code of conduct comes into force.
