Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Wednesday launched the rehabilitation and upsizing of the old sewer line using the pipe bursting method along Gurudwara Road at Mangor-Vasco on Wednesday morning.

The event was attended by Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, Councillor Amay Chopdekar, and local residents.

Speaking at the function, MLA Salkar emphasised the urgency of the project.

“The old sewage pipelines would often get blocked, causing sewage to overflow onto the roads. The situation worsened when vehicles passed through, splashing sewage on pedestrians. We had earlier taken up similar work on one stretch and realised that this section also required urgent attention. The rehabilitation work on both stretches is now underway at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore,” said Salkar.

He explained that the trenchless technology being used would avoid major road excavation, allowing for the installation of wider and more efficient pipelines to accommodate the growing population. Once the pipeline work is completed, the roads will be hot-mixed for improved infrastructure.

The MLA further announced ongoing work on two sewage pumping stations, with plans to construct two additional stations to enhance the sewage system in the Vasco constituency. He assured that 70% of the sewage work would be completed soon.

Speaking about overall infrastructure development, Salkar acknowledged the inconvenience caused by ongoing sewage and underground cabling work but reassured residents that these projects were crucial for long-term improvements.

“We have nearly completed the underground cabling work and will soon begin hot-mixing the roads. Additionally, the tender for the beautification of Swatantrata Path and F.L. Gomes Road, at a cost of Rs 12 crore, has already been approved. We urge residents to cooperate for some more time in the larger interest of better infrastructure that will enhance their quality of life,” Salkar added.

The projects are expected to significantly improve Vasco’s sewage infrastructure and road conditions, ensuring better sanitation and smoother traffic movement in the area.
