A group of sex workers, including transgenders created a scene at the Margao police station on late Tuesday evening.
They protested over the alleged harassment meted out to them by the men-in-uniform, alleging that some of the policemen extort money from them and blackmail customers to cough up money.
Saying that they are not involved in thefts or anti-social activities at the Old station road, they pointed out that they have in the past helped the police to nab the miscreants involved in petty thefts.
“Do we have no right to live and eke a living? Why is the Margao police harassing and assaulting us? The police assault us if they don’t pay money,” they told media persons at the Margao police station.
Saying they have come to seek justice for themselves, the sex workers, including the transgenders, said they are ready to give up prostitution if the government provides them jobs. “We are also human beings. They cannot just come and assault us,” they claimed as they named three policemen for meting out harassment.
