SFX remark: Margao, Canacona witnesses heavy protests demanding Velingkar's arrest, public transportation affected

PANAJI

Situation seems to be going out of control as protestors in South Goa, particularly Margao and Canacona have intensified their agitation demanding the arrest of ex-RSS Goa Chief Subhash Velingkar.

People across communities are demanding his arrest for offending St Francis Xavier by calling for the DNA of the preserved relics. The Bicholim police had just last night registered FIR under section 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of BNS following a complaint by MLA Cruz Silva.

The protestors marched to Margao police station soon thereafter and blocked the roads. Several tourists, locals including students had to walk several kms as public transportation has been stalled by the protestors until their demands are met. There have been traffic diversions in Margao.

In a show of solidarity, hundreds of residents from Canacona have gathered outside the Canacona police station and sang hymns in honour of St Francis Xavier.

Amidst this, Bicholim police issued a notice to Velingkar seeking his appearance for questioning. It is also learnt that his residence in Panaji was searched late Friday night but he was not found.

Huge police force have been deployed at these areas to ensure law and order is maintained.
