CANACONA
The 38th and 39th houses built under the Shram-Dham initiative of Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar were officially handed over to two widows from Amone (Poinguinim) on Saturday. The houses were inaugurated by newly elected BJP State President Damu Naik.
Due to lack of space, a ground-plus-one concrete house was built on the site of an old, damaged mud-walled house, where both families had been living in poor conditions. The house was in a severely dilapidated state, with no proper door and shared by eight family members.
Under the Shram-Dham initiative, the ground floor was allocated to Shalini Gaonkar and her family, while the upper floor was given to Madhuri Gaonkar and her family. Both women are widows, and their late husbands were brothers.
The inauguration took place ahead of the BJP’s Canacona Karyakarta Melava scheduled later that evening. Damu Naik handed over the house keys to Shalini and Madhuri in the presence of Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar, Poinguinim Sarpanch Savita Tawadkar, and Shram-Dham volunteers who helped with the construction.
Also present were Poinguinim panch Mahesh Naik, Canacona BJP Mandal President Prabhakar Gaonkar, and others. Damu Naik praised Tawadkar’s Shram-Dham scheme, calling it an innovative and compassionate initiative to provide proper housing to those in need. “Your MLA and our Speaker has gone above and beyond. Not only is he expanding the Shram-Dham scheme to other parts of Goa, but he is also building three houses for disaster-affected families in Wayanad (Kerala),” said Naik.
Speaking at the event, Tawadkar said he draws strength from his team of karyakartas (party workers) and is committed to helping more people in need, not just in Canacona but wherever necessary.
Later, speaking to the media, Shalini Gaonkar described her family’s earlier living conditions as extremely difficult, with eight members squeezed into a broken structure of four half-mud walls and no proper door. She thanked MLA Tawadkar for quickly stepping in to build a proper house with bedrooms, kitchen, entrance hall, verandah, electricity, and water connections.
