Barely eight months after it was inaugurated, the roof at the extended portion of the Siolim Primary Health Centre (PHC) has started leaking, prompting authorities to place a plastic sheet to cover the leaking roof.

The old building is no better and is also in bad condition due to leakages.

The Siolim PHC was constructed in 1988 to provide health facilities to residents of Marna-Siolim, Oxel-Siolim, Sodiem-Siolim, Verla-Canca, Guirim, Parra, Assagao and Anjuna-Caisua.

With the increasing population of residents and tourists, the existing PHC was found to be inadequate. There were also growing demands for better health facilities at the PHC.

The government then decided to construct an extension at the rear of the existing building and construction of this extended building was taken up in 2009.

The contractor, however, abandoned the project and the tender for this project was floated again. The project got stalled for 15 years due to various reasons.

The extension was finally inaugurated in January this year, but the roof began to leak as soon as monsoons began in the State.

Joaquim Barros, VDC coordinator of Marna Panchayat, said the roof of the new building at the PHC has been leaking and dampness is visible in the building. He also claimed that there is a problem in the construction of the toilet section.

Added another resident: “The building needs urgent repairs as water has been leaking for several days now. The old building of the PHC is also in bad condition. Covering the roof is not enough as it is only a temporary solution.”

Health officials confirmed the poor condition of both buildings at the PHC.

“The health services has been informed about this situation and a letter has also been sent to the PWD to undertake necessary repair work,” an official said.
