PANAJI: The Cyber Crime Police arrested Yaramalla Venkateswarulu, a 53-year-old jeweller from Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, in a digital fraud case.
The victim woman from Siolim had lodged a police complaint alleging she received a WhatsApp call from a person posing a Delhi Crime Branch inspector. He claimed a police complaint was filed against her and showed her forged Supreme Court documents indicated a "digital arrest."
The scammer demanded one crore rupees, transferred in three transactions. "The police investigation led us to trace 40 lakh rupees to Venkateswarulu's account, which has since been frozen. He was apprehended in Vijayawada and brought to the Cyber Crime Police Station and arrested," Akshat Ayush (IPS), Additional Superintendent of Police for Cyber Crime said at a press briefing today.
The Cyber Crime Police Goa advised the public to verify the identity of callers claiming to be officials, avoid rushing large financial transactions, recognize fraud patterns like high-return promises, and report suspicious activities to the 1930 portal or cybercrime.gov.in.
