Unhappy that sewage from many buildings in Sanquelim municipality is being discharged into the open, the Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC) on Thursday decided to make Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) mandatory for large residential buildings in the future.
This was decided at a council meeting which was chaired by SMC Chairperson Siddhi Prabhu and attended by Vice Chairperson Anand Kanekar, Councillors Yashwant Madkar, Dayanand Boryekar, Brahmanand Desai, Riyaz Khan, Praveen Blegan, Rashmi Desai, Deepa Janmi, Anjana Kamat, Chief Officer Bhimnath Khorjuvekar, the municipal engineer and others.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, SMC Chairperson Siddhi Prabhu said the municipal council has taken serious note of complains regarding pollution and stench and warned that strict action will be taken against those found discharging sewage in the open.
“Action may also be taken to disconnect electricity and water connections,” said Prabhu.
The SMC chairperson informed reporters that the council has also decided to set up a biomethanation plant in the municipality.
“Wet waste generated from the municipality will be processed and used to generate electricity. All procedures for this project have been completed and work will begin shortly,” said Prabhu.
She also mentioned that the Sopo fees would be auctioned shortly.
“SMC municipal inspectors currently collect the Sopo of vendors in the municipal area. This Sopo will be auctioned in the coming days and given on contract basis,” said Prabhu.
“It has also been decided to hire workers on contract basis for garbage collection. The existing workers will continue their work, while additional workers will do the work on contract basis.”
The chairperson also warned that strict action would be taken against those indulging in illegal construction or other illegal work in the municipality.
“The municipality will take this matter seriously. If anyone is indulging in illegal work, we appeal to the people to lodge a complaint with the municipal council,” Prabhu added.
