PORVORIM

Issues pertaining to the Porvorim elevated corridor, stray animals and mega projects were discussed at the Socorro Gram Sabha on Sunday.

Socorro Sarpanch Soniya Pednekar welcomed the gathering while Panchayat Secretary Satish Gawas read out the minutes of the last Gram Sabha.

Eric Menezes mentioned that residents are confused about the movement of traffic in Socorro due to ongoing construction work of the elevated corridor.

“We were assured before commencement of the work that a presentation would be made to us about the Porvorim elevated corridor and traffic diversions. But so far, there has been no presentation and as a result, there has been confusion among residents about traffic diversions,” said Menezes.

The sarpanch assured to speak to authorities concerned and arrange a presentation of the elevated corridor and movement of traffic.

Residents also raised the issue of stray cattle wandering on the national Mapusa–Panaji highway and internal roads. They felt that the panchayat should resolve this menace by constructing a cow shelter or sending the stray cattle to a Goshala.

Residents also complained about the stray dogs on the roads and said trend has now emerged of people feeding stray dogs on the roads. They claimed that some dog lovers bring food in large quantities and dump it on the road. Dogs eat the food as much they want and then leave the remaining food on the road. The residents asked the panchayat to arrange for the sterilisation of these stray dogs.

Commenting on mega projects, the residents said that since roads in the village are very narrow, the panchayat should not give permission to mega projects, as it would create problems for vehicular movement in the village.

Soter D’Souza, Wilbur Ticlo and Stephen D’Sa were among the residents who participated in the discussions.
